Most theatrical shorts became either super8 or 8mm reels. This was only if the short was very successful. Castle films produced many live action shorts on 8mm reels. They mainly only sold Walter lantz cartoons and TerryToons on 8mm. Anyway I have the ace in the hole and here is an articles.
Castle sold Lantz and Terry cartoons in 8mm and 16mm (silent and sound). They also offered some Ub Iwerks cartoons (billing him as "U.B. Iwerks").
ReplyDeleteSuper 8 didn't come around till the '60s... it differed from regular 8mm film by having a larger picture area and smaller perforations.
Castle often changed the titles of the Woody cartoons - "Ski for Two" became "Woody Plays Santa Claus," for example.
Universal subsidiary United World bought Castle Films, which became Universal 8 in the '70s.
