Cartoon Characters have been used for PC commericals for a while. The most notable is Mr. Magoo who was the mascot for Samtron. Here are a few Magoo Samtron advertisements. These were only in print. He had no TV ads and I think these ads were all in PC Magazine
Magoo is joined by his dog McBarker from the '70s revival series "What's New, Mr. Magoo?" (produced at DePatie-Freleng ... UPA existed in name only by then).
