No. I have no idea where people got that idea. Mel hated carrots. Bob
Clampett and Chuck Jones both deny that in interviews. Mel would chew a carrot
and spit it into a wastebasket.

The
name of the cartoon was I Love to Singa. The name of the owl is Owl Jolson. He is
a parody of Al Jolson.
Publicity people as early as the mid-'40s claimed Mel was allergic to carrots. Even HE said so in later interviews. When his book came out, he set the record straight.
ReplyDeleteMel was the Voice of cartoons, at least at Warner Brothers. He looked nothing like what I expected. He was great on Jack Benny's Program, too.
