Popeye had many cameos on the Simpsons too! Popeye even appeared in Simpsons merchandise and cameos. Homer as a joke is often imitating Popeye but his power source is beer instead of Spinach.
This is a clear reference and homage to the Popeye black and white cartoons of the 30s. Popeye also didn't get along with his father Poopdeck Pappy.
Remember when Marge was introduced to anabolic steroids? LOL XD
